Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear City Council, I am a member of the Cal Poly Urbanists club and am a student without a car and therefore have a vested interest in pedestrian accessibility in downtown SLO. I implore you to not buy the surface parking lot at 1166 Higuera St, item 6B. If it is purchased however, there are ways it could better serve the downtown than continuing as a surface lot as planned. The Downtown Concept Plan emphasizes sustainability and creating more spaces for car transportation flies in the face of that goal. If the area could be developed into a mixed- use medium density housing project with commercial space, it would activate the area that is currently a dead space for empty cars. With the addition of a public plaza, pedestrians could use the area and engage monetarily with the commercial spaces, and also use it as a pathway to the downtown core. The $4.7 million cost is exorbitant, and parking does not generate that much revenue. Although a commercial and housing area would cost significantly more up front, the city could profit much more from sales tax and increased pedestrian engagement. Thank you for your time and consideration on this important matter. Best, Sophia Chin she/her/hers Architecture Student, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo schin08@calpoly.edu 503.962.0882 1
