Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear City Council, I am Isaiah Zamora, an Architecture student at Cal Poly and I am a part of the Cal Poly Urbanists (CPU) Club. I am writing you in regards to Item 6B, 1166 Higuera St. Buying this land for parking seems counterintuitive to SLO city’s concept plan. Allowing more parking does not increase the value of the downtown area. Fiscally, parking makes way less for the city than sales tax. That is why we are proposing to buy the land for mixed use. I know personally walking downtown is all about enjoying the journey as much as the destination. However, while walking downtown on Farmers’ Market nights these parking lots become sinks of darkness, while during the day these lots become heat sinks adding to the heat island effect. The space is ill utilized and becomes an opponent the ethos of downtown. To drive more business, increase better circulation, and promote a more friendly downtown, City Council should consider a more Strong Town approach. Investing in ephemeral business stands or a parklet to promote walkability or creating a community garden are just a couple ways that 1166 Higuera St, could be improved. As a resident, student, and pedestrian I hope you take these concerns to heart. Thank you. Sincerely, Isaiah Zamora igzamora@calpoly.edu 1
