Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear SLO City Council, My name is Collin Parker, a city planning student at Cal Poly and a board member of Cal Poly Urbanists, and I am writing regarding item 6B: the acquisition of 1166 Higuera street. I firmly believe the proposed usage of a public surface level parking lot is an irresponsible use of space near downtown SLO. This site has great potential to build upon the desirable aspects of downtown (local shops, pedestrian comfort, "small town charm,") and the continued prioritization of car usage is in conflict with these ideas. When I think of what makes SLO a great place to live, I think of the aforementioned vibes that low-mid rise development has already created, and not the smog, danger, and noise that has been created by the prioritization of drivers over everyone else. I hope that should the City of SLO decide to purchase the lot, that a more sensible development is created instead of a parking lot. My suggestion would be a mixed use low rise building which incorporates commercial space on the ground level, with 1-2 floors of affordable housing above. This would generate sales tax revenue for the city in place of the parking fees, while alleviating some of the housing crisis load, and supporting the pleasant atmosphere of downtown.
