As a bit of background, each year the American Society of Civil Engineers hosts a competition that challenges students to design, analyze, test, build, present, and race a concrete canoe. The competition has value in that it is a difficult challenge and simultaneously encapsulates all of the elements of a real world engineering project: time management, teamwork, budget constraints, and so on. The students compete against hundreds of engineering schools across the US, Canada, and recently, China as well. The SLO community can be proud that CalPoly students have placed in the top five nationally 9 times in the past nine years, and have won the national competition 3 times during that span. Over this same time period of success, our students have been using Laguna Lake as a testing and training facility with the kind support of the local community near Vista Del Lago. The students test new hull designs, gather data obtained by instrumenting the performance of the hulls, and subsequently use the data to improve their designs. They also train new students in various aspects of the competition during their time on lake. Beyond the technical aspects, they also make lasting memories, great friendships, and have a good time at Laguna Lake. We are very appreciative of the Laguna Lake natural resource and the community surrounding it, and fully support efforts to restore, preserve, and protect the lake. On behalf of the CalPoly Engineering Teams past and present, we thank you. Garrett Hall, Ph.D., P.E. Professor, College of Engineering CalPoly, SLO
