Hello city council,
I just heard that the city is considering purchasing 1166 Higuera to turn it into a parking lot. This is absurd.
I seriously do not understand why people think the downtown needs more parking. For a city that wants to be climate
neutral, more parking is only going to actively work against that goal. Especially with the brand new parking structure
going in on Marsh/Nipomo! Parking is NOT what we need.
Why is the original plan for this lot stalled? How is a parking lot better for the community than a public park and hangout
area that can actually boost the economy and bring people into the town.
Or new housing! This is one of the few lots that actually fits into the strict rules given by the downtown density
ordinance to actually create some affordable housing (something that we desperately need, FYI). This lot was even
explicitly listed by the city as a good candidate for new housing!! We could build AT LEAST 30 new units here, probably
even double that.
Parking is the absolute last thing we need on this lot. Please please please consider the impact $5 million can have when
spent on almost anything else. We are already spending millions on a new parking structure, and losing thousands on
making parking cheaper downtown.
Thank you,
Harrison Cutrone - Morro Street resident
