Whereas, The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo was established in 1923 as the first Rotary Club in San
Luis Obispo and remains dedicated to supporting and improving the quality of life of all residents of
San Luis Obispo; and
Whereas, Since its establishment on December 3, 1923, through its members, the Rotary Club of
San Luis Obispo has worked to create and improve community spaces, including creating Eto Park,
and building enhancements to Mission Plaza, Laguna Lake Park, Mitchell Park, Sinsheimer Pool,
Sinsheimer Stadium, to name a few of the more than 30 major projects; and
Whereas, Over the past 100 years, through its members, the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo has
worked to improve the natural environment by protecting open space and planting more than 2,000
trees throughout the City; and
Whereas, The Rotary Club has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to San Luis Obispo
High School and Cuesta College students to pursue post-secondary education and training; and
Whereas, Since its establishment, The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo has donated money to local
nonprofit and community groups, including the first gift of the fundraising campaign to build the
Performing Arts Center; and
Whereas, The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo has extended its support to the people of Compostela,
Mexico for more than 30 years, including involving Cal Poly faculty and students in projects in
Compostela; and
Whereas, In 2023, The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo is celebrating its 100th anniversary of action
that improves residents’ lives today and invests in programs and projects for the future;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the entire
City Council do hereby recognize the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo on its 100th Anniversary and its
continuing valuable role within the community.
