Subject: Laguna Lake Conservation - July 15th City Meeting
Dear Council Members,
I am with Cal Poly's Concrete Canoe team and am strongly encouraging the city to go forward with their plan to
help conserve Laguna Lake. I have attached a letter regarding the matter and hope that this will help show the
necessity for the lake's conservation.
Thank you for your time,

Dear Council Members,
I am writing to push for the conservation of Laguna Lake. As a part of Cal Poly's
Concrete Canoe team, the lake has been a valuable resource to us for many years. It
has allowed us to practice for paddling throughout the school year so that we can
compete with other universities both on the regional and national level. Without
this resource, we fear that the same success from past years will not be achieved for
2015.
The Concrete Canoe project consists of a canoe made out of concrete, that is judged
based on oral presentation, design paper, final product, and canoe performance.
Canoe performance includes the racing of the concrete canoe, which counts for 25%
of the overall score. Laguna Lake has been a critical resource in order to prepare for
the canoe races. Cal Poly has put a high emphasis on paddling each year by having
its paddlers train at the lake 3 to 4 times per week. Thanks to the lake and our
team's hard work, we have achieved great success over the past years. Most
recently, Cal Poly's Concrete Canoe Team placed 1st at the regional level and 2nd in
the nation.
These awards have brought positive recognition to the university, its engineering
program, and the San Luis Obispo area along with keeping students passionate
about the project year after year. It is sad to see the lake dither but we highly
encourage any conservation plans to be put into effect. Thank you for taking this
into consideration and feel free to contact me at iessica.levva7Pemail.com.
Sincerely,
Jessica Leyva
