Subject: Reported Code Violations
Dear Mr. Mezzapesa,
My name is and I live at in SLO. We bought our home
approximately 7 months ago and are trying to fix it up. In the process, I believe some of the changes my
husband and I decided to make (adding perimeter markings through an official survey, removing rat
infested perimeter hedges on our property, removing worn/rotting front yard fencing on our property,
and hiring a contractor to repair our damaged Accessory Dwelling Unit, etc.) have caused our neighbor
at 657 Howard St to develop an unwarranted vendetta against us. Alex McLachlan (657 Howard St), has
even gone to the extent to paint his mailbox post with a vulgar “FU” symbol
There are multiple code violations on the 657 & 659 Howard St property that give us concern for
our safety and free use of our property.
1. Items being stored on the roof tops (hoses, cow skulls, rusted metal framing, etc.) (fire/collapse
hazard)
2. Using various objects to block the public right of way in the road, which he only removes when
he parks his vehicle there
3. Numerous sheds/accessory structures (at least 5) in the backyard and three of them are way
less than 3 ft from our property line (fire hazard)
4. Shipping container being used as an additional storage facility in the driveway (decreases
parking for everyone on the street)
5. Wooden structure exceeding 12 ft high on back perimeter (fire hazard)
6. Several more less significant code violations
I have attached several pictures that document some of the above issues.
It seems that the neighbor code violation complaints we filed with the city on 12/15/2022 (with Nick
Buckley at the city counter) are being ignored. Back on January 18, we tried to use the Ask SLO app to
enter these code violations and they were immediately cancelled out of the system with a response that
there is already an active code violation in process for this complaint. Two months have passed and we
have seen zero signs of correction to any of the legitimate code violations mentioned above.
I understand from speaking with my husband that we made an initial error in starting ADU work without
a permit. We quickly resolved this matter and have been nothing but cooperative with the city since
this mishap. If this initial mistake is somehow still being used against us to ignore safety/free use
violations at our neighbor’s residence, we believe this is completely inappropriate.

I would greatly appreciate an update on these code violations, especially the multiple sheds and blocked
driveway/parking issues. They all give us concern, but these two create the biggest hindrance for us to
enjoy our property. Thank you for your time and help with this matter.
Best,
