Subject:proposal by SLOPD to expand the Safety Enhancement Zone

Dear City Council Members,
I'm writing in support of the proposal by SLOPD to expand the Safety Enhancement Zone. This seems like the least we
can do.
I own a home near campus. Our quality of life has declined in the years since we bought our home, when we were
surrounded by well-maintained homes owned by elderly retirees. Now we're surrounded by dilapidated slumlord rentals
and fraternity annexes.
Cal Poly students rule this town. They are here in greater numbers than ever. I urge you to expand the Safety
Enhancement Zone, preferably with penalties beyond fines. A $1,000 fine means nothing to a 20-year-old who drives a
late-model BMW 3-series sedan. It may be more meaningful to students if there was the threat of suspension from Cal
Poly.
With more remote workers moving to SLO, we have the opportunity to improve the quality of life in town. SLO has the
potential to be a safe, appealing place for adults and their families.
Thank you for your consideration.
Doug Irion
