Use cau?on when deciding to open a?achments, click links, or respond. I just realized there are two typos in the le?er I sent earlier today. One is my address (557 Stoneridge, not 550) and the other is at the end of the second paragraph, where I men?on turning “le?” to travel to a shopping plaza for access to a traffic light, when it should have read turning “right”. Below is the corrected copy. Thank you and sorry for any confusion. Marta Peluso Dear Members of the San Luis Obispo City Council: I’m wri?ng concerning the safety of travelling to and from a major San Luis Obispo street near my home, o?en referred to as the South Broad Street Corridor. It has been a problema?c and dangerous place to drive for years, and I hope the City will soon take ac?on to remedy some of the major problems that make it unsafe. I live on Stoneridge Drive, and pulling out onto heavily trafficked and fast-moving Broad Street has always been precarious. Because there is no access to an intersec?on with a traffic light from my neighborhood, travelling from my home to Downtown SLO requires crossing two lanes of Broad Street, then huddling in the middle lane where cars are speeding by quickly on both sides, un?l a moment opens when I can pull into the line of traffic. I’m somewhat used to doing this as I’ve lived in Stoneridge for over two decades, but I have never felt comfortable about it, and some?mes I end up turning right, driving to a nearby shopping plaza and going into their parking lot where there’s a traffic light that will allow me to safely get onto Broad. My husband and I o?en hear from people visi?ng our home how dangerous it feels to them to cross traffic on Broad Street to get to and from our home. I understand there is a possibility of funding that could address this dangerous situa?on and I urge you to allocate that funding to update the 2014 Broad Street Plan and to approve changes that will make it safer for ci?zens, like me, who must deal with this problema?c situa?on every day. The precariousness of pulling out onto Broad Street might be improved by:  Adding a traffic light to calm the flow of traffic between the area of South/Santa Barbara Streets and Orcu? Road, which would also provide a place for people on foot to cross Broad Street (which is 1 almost impossible to do between Orcu? and the pedestrian light on Woodbridge, a stretch of a half mile).  Add meridians to give drivers more defined places to pull out into a middle lane, which would also improve the appearance of one of the major gateways into downtown SLO  Create more visibility for pulling out from the access streets from the many neighborhoods on the south side of Broad Street, by crea?ng greater limita?ons to parking near those access streets. A few years ago, parking was scaled back from the intersec?ons, but a problem s?ll exists when SUV’s and other tall vehicles park in the permi?ed spaces. When that happens, and it happens o?en, visibility of oncoming traffic becomes blocked and pulling out onto Broad Street feels almost like a game of chicken, i.e. it becomes even more dangerous. Thank you for the work you do for our community and for your a?en?on to this grave issue.
