Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear Mayor and members of the San Luis Obispo City Council: The purpose of this letter is to request you allocate funding towards implementing the Broad Street Corridor Plan circulation improvements. As one of the many planners who worked on the plan over the years and then saw it formally (and finally) adopted as part of the LUCE update in 2014, it has been gratifying to see the development changes made possible in the area due to the plan’s adoption. Much progress has been made in revitalizing the area and in constructing residential units as part of the plan’s implementation. What is lacking, though, are some of the key components to support the revitalization of the area, namely traffic calming along Broad Street. Since this major corridor transitioned from State jurisdiction to City purview, residents on either side of the corridor have been hopeful for positive change. Pedestrian and biking activity is discouraged by high vehicle speeds, a plethora of turning movements, the long distance across traffic lanes, and, in some places, limited visibility. This street needs to be upgraded to reflect the City’s values and to implement sustainability goals of connectivity for pedestrians and bicyclists. Please allocate funding towards moving Broad Street improvements forward - whether that is engineering, or plan update or whatever is required to implement the circulation improvements to support the development that was envisioned, and is already being built.
