Presentation on Intern Program and Camp Cinder Item 4a Human Relations Commission Agenda Report For Agenda of: 2/7/2024 Item Number: 4a FROM: Todd Tuggle, Fire Chief Phone Number: (805) 781-7073 E-mail: ttuggle@slocity.org SUBJECT: RECEIVE A PRESENTATION FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ABOUT THEIR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM AND INFORMATION ON CAMP CINDER. RECOMMENDATION The Human Relations Commission (HRC) to receive a presentation from the Fire Department about their internship program and information on Camp Cinder. BACKGROUND SLO City Fire initiated an Intern program two years ago with the intent of expanding the pool of qualified candidates for firefighter positions, especially to traditionally underrepresented groups. Since the emergence of the program, three interns have come through the department, including two women and one young man. Two of the three interns have landed full time firefighter positions with nearby departments. In 2024, SLO City Fire is seeking to expand the opportunities for interns within the department to include five other areas of the Department mission. It is the intent of the Department to connect with groups that may have an ancillary interest in the Fire Department, but not necessarily to be a firefighter. By expanding opportunities, we can create wider understanding of the activities the Fire Department engages in to attract more talent to department and the City. NEXT STEPS Next steps are a presentation to the Human Relations Commission as a partner in spreading the word about opportunities in the Fire Department. A potential intern need not fit the stereotype of a firefighter because we have core missions that expand far beyond what is seen in popular media. We have a Mobile Crisis Unit, Me chanics, Vegetation Management, Inspections and Emergency Management functions. All of these core missions interact with each other and the traditional firefighting roles. In the future, we intend that an intern could work in multiple areas to find a niche within the Fire Department that they never knew they could fill.
