City Council, I am writing today in regards to the upcoming meeting where the budget will be reviewed and unallocated funds can be allocated. The corridor between South Street and Orcutt is extremely dangerous for walking and biking due to the high amounts and speed of traffic. My work office is off Orcutt road so I have to experience the traffic and congestion on Broad street every time I go in. Broad street is extremely wide, with parking and bike lanes, sidewalks, driveways, and many side streets. The pedestrian crossings are few and far between (and the one installed recently seems to cause more confusion for drivers than safety for those looking to cross the street). We need a separated bike and/or multi-use path to protect pedestrian and cycle traffic from the cars and a way to slow down the speeds on the road. Many improvements were suggested in the South Broad Street Area Plan, adopted in 2014. I humbly request that the city take the first step to improving the safety of this travel corridor and work towards addressing the following stated major city goals: 1. Climate Action and Sustainable Transportation: Making this street safer to walk and bike will reduce car dependency and help the city achieve its climate action goals. 2. DEI and Housing and Homelessness: A number of the new housing units in the South Broad area are affordable units. Implementing this would be a step towards removing barriers to safe transportation opportunities and creates greater transportation equity in our community. 3. Economic Resiliency: Making this street safer will allow for better and more equitable access to the great businesses that operate on South Broad Street. Thank you for your consideration, Kate Miles 1
