SLO City Counsil Dear Council Members of San Luis Obispo, I am writing you about this upcoming meeting agenda, item 6.a, in hopes of opening the discussion for extra funding to review the 2014 Broad Street project. This area is in dire need of observation due to the growing number of residents in the area. Being a homeowner, with two active children, this is a big topic for me. The fact we are the only residential area with not a single park in walking distance should be an eye-opener for starters. We are backed up against the train tracks, with no way of getting to Sinshimer without heading down to Orcutt, over the train track, and back down the bike path, which is a massive challenge for my youngest who is 4 years old. We just had basketball photos at the YMCA where we had to drive because I had both my boys with me. Looking in the other direction we have to cross the busy Broad St to get to Meadow Park. We are grateful for the light for pedestrians, but living and working off Broad Street, I’ve seen too many close calls or confused drivers to endanger my kids at that crossing. We are an extremely active family in the community, with all the seasonal sports, attendance at two different schools, cub scouts, hiking, martial arts, work, ect. We are very familiar with the nightmare of turning left. Cars have impacted SLO, we all know, and Broad Street seems to be the next street that needs to be looked at now that South Street, Orcutt, and many others have made changes to slow the traffic. Whether it’s traffic lights, median strips, or designated turning lanes, something needs to be addressed. I would love to see a park near us off Victoria, but just being able to get to one of the two parks with ease would be amazing for the neighboring kids in the area. All I’m asking for is for some of the available funding to be used to look back into the Broad Street Plan, update it, and help us (in a timely manner) get places without having to get into cars. San Luis Obispo is growing, and so is the traffic. Let’s make sure we’re keeping our children safe while they get out of the house for some exercise. Thank you so much for your time and your help. Sincerely, Greg Whitener Humbert Ave San Luis Obispo 1
