Hello,
I am writing in support of taking action on the South Broad Street Area plan that was adopted in
December 2014 that addressed many of the issues
(www.slocity.org/home/showpublisheddocument/5019/635563068397670000). While some of the plan has
been implemented, mostly zoning and infrastructure in the residential area east of Broad, none of the plan
regarding Broad Street or the bike/pedestrian access over the train tracks has been addressed. In addition, in
the last 10 years at least 355 housing units have been added to the area and traffic has increased dramatically to
the commercial area around the airport.
• Since so much has changed, I believe the 2014 plan needs to be updated so City staff can find the best
possible solutions to this growing neighborhood
• The center turn lane is open for turns at every intersection, making for very unsafe driving. This lane is
often used as an unlawful travel lane. I sometimes feel as though I need to reconsider using the Dog Groomer
who I love (Golden Paw on Broad) because the location and ability to get into and out of the parking lot safely
and within reasonable time is difficult. Driving at night in this corridor is particularly challenging. The cars
are travelling very fast in multiple lanes and turning across three lanes in order to merge into traffic.
• Traffic needs to be calmed on Broad Street. It is treated as a highway, not a city street, making it nearly
impossible to make left turns safely. Perhaps meridians, lower speeds, and additional traffic lights would force
folks to slow down and treat the area as a neighborhood- a freeway.
• There is limited visibility at the intersections caused partially by parking, making it unsafe for drivers,
bicyclists and pedestrians. Pulling out from the street after using the Quickie car wash/Enterprise rental car is
always done with a wing, a prayer and a heavy foot on the gas pedal. The Dip in the road makes it very
difficult to see traffic and when someone is coming through at 45-55 mph is very dangerous. Turning Right is
the safest option....but I live to the Left...
• With the current speed limit, lack of crosswalks and increased travel on the street, it is not safe for children
to ride to school or for residents to go to a park.
Thanks for your consideration! We want this neighborhood and its businesses and residents to enjoy the same
great standard of living as others in the city. The city had to make major traffic changes on Madonna Road to
anticipate the additional use and patronage of the stores and now, new housing. I think we are far past the
time to do the same on Broad street.
