TO SLO PARKS AND REC
SLO CITY COUNCIL February 4, 2024
We are requesting that you change the tennis usage hours on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays at French Park to 12 noon and dedicate the morning hours to
pickleball. The reason is that the pickleball use warrants the morning hours to
accommodate the heavy usage. There are typically 20-25 people waiting to get
on the three courts available, while two retired tennis players hold the court
below —video of this is available upon request. 1) they often stand at the net
chatting while dozens of pickleball players wait above; 2) there are numerous
nearby tennis courts unused and available at those hours in SLO; 3) the tennis
court would accommodate 16 pickleball players per game and can rotate in
another 16 every 15 minutes or so; 4) the two players have so much as stated
that they do this to prevent pickleball usage. 5) Many who knew Joanna are
certain she would have been fully supportive of using the tennis court for
Pickleball.
There is simply no reason that the literally two tennis players could not 1) play at
noon —they are both retired or 2) play at another location. This is truly
unreasonable that this limitation continues. The fact is that SLO does not have
adequate pickleball courts and the future courts are not close to being built. The
strain on the pickleball community far outweighs the arguments of the tennis
players.
SOLUTION:
Change Tuesday and Wednesday: Designate all mornings at the lower courts for
pickleball use with the option for tennis at noon.
BENEFIT:
Accommodate the large group of pickleball players that regularly play in the mornings.
REGARDING TENNIS:
The tennis players have other options, the pickleball players do not have other options.
The tennis players can play on any number of nearby (Islay, Sinsheimer, etc) tennis
courts that are typically vacant, or play starting at noon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
at French Park.
Please contact us via frenchparkpickleball@gmail.com. We strongly urge you to make
this change immediately.
