Dear Mayor Stewart and Councilmembers Francis, Marx, Pease, and Shoresman,
It has come to my attention that some unallocated funds have become available for a mid-year budget
review. I am writing to ask that you allocate funding to the South Broad St Area Plan.
My personal experience since moving to Broad St. has been one of concern since the day I moved in. The
street is dangerous to cross, cars are speeding at 60 MPH or more and there are pedestrians zig zagging
in traffic trying to cross outside the wide spread crossing areas, and bikers on both sides of the road. Even
making a right hand turn is difficult, not to mention a left hand turn. In addition, my daughter will turn 16
in June and I am deeply concerned for her safety, not for driving in general but my fear is of her trying to
navigate Broad St in its current state. It is paralyzing to consider. Thus to say that whether you are in a
car, on foot, or on a bicycle, Broad has become a dangerous street and something needs to be done to
improve circulation.
My aim in asking you to allocate these funds is to get some traffic calming and safety measures for cars,
bikes and pedestrians implemented as soon as possible on Broad St. In particular, circulation
improvements are extremely important for Broad St. traffic, and with all of the new developments that
are being and will be developed, it is only going to be more necessary. This is an opportunity for you to
address those issues that already exist, and get ahead of issues to come. I hope you consider this in your
discussion and allocate funds to implement the already approved, South Broad Street area Plan.
