Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council :
I had planned on speaking at your Sept . 25th meeting when you will be considerin g
the new SLO Brew location, but unfortunately I am unable to attend . Pleas e
consider this email my voice .
Removing the exterior staircase an the Creek Walk and replacing it with a n
enclosed staircase, presumably to protect concertgoers from rain—afte r
queuing in the rain for up to several hours—makes no sense and would erod e
the charm and old-fashioned character of the creek area .The exterio r
staircase should not he removed ,
eut there is an alternative to removing the exterior staircasq :build a n
interior staircase at the time of the retrofit . This could result in a reduction i n
seating but would still leave an almost 50% increase in seating capacity .
To allow queuing by a private enterprise on public space —the San Lui s
Creek Walk—is an enormous gift, especially in a tranquil, natural setting an d
one that belongs to all of us .The orosnect of un to 600 nennle aueuing o n
the Creek Walk 5-7 times a week is unacceptable .
But there is an alternative to queuinq :a Condition to the Use Permit tha t
requires ticket sales only by advance purchase with reserved seating . This i s
easily accomplished with a telephone service and/or web site and woul d
eliminate the need for queuing . This is what the ubiquitous cell phone is for .
Tickets could be sold onsite anytime .At the very least,q ueuing should b e
confined to Higuera Street .In the age of electronic ticketing, queuing i s
almost archaic .
A bar on the roofto p , if allowed, would be an increase of one bar to downtow n
and one bar to SLO Brew's existing two bars—at a time when the Council an d
Police Dept . are grappling with problems caused by over-consumption o f
alcohol .The Use Permit should he modified to deny the rooftop r.
Music at the rooftop bar is a concern .There are other restaurants nearby, th e
popular Novo (separated by only the Frog and Peach) and the smalle r
Creekside Brewery nextdoor. Neither one plays any music outside .I
understand a glass sound barrier is under consideration . No glass barrie r
that I know of could prevent sound from floating freely over the barrier . I n
the event the rooftop bar is allowed, music,p iped or live, should b e
A question arises at this point ;Are there any restrictions on the type of "liv e
entertainment" presented? Would "girlie" shows with nudity be allowed ?
WestPac is not the Mom and Poo o peration of 1988,the startup year for SLO
Brew . It is a large investment, real estate, construction and developmen t
company employing over 350 people with 1 .5 billion dollars in assets sinc e
its founding . Its holdings include at least eight prime properties in San Luis
Obispo . Their annual revenues are between $500,000 and $1,000,000 . Wit h
assets and revenues of this magnitude, WestPac can afford a telephon e
service and/or web site and an interior staircase .
Havin g said that. with this project San Luis Obis po is at a crossroads .We
can surrender the vitality of the shopping and dining scene in the downtow n
core to the bar and entertainment industry, or we can say Enough! and mak e
every effort to protect all that makes downtown San Luis Obispo, includin g
the Creek Walk, the appealing heart of town that it now is .
There is nothing inherently wrong with the project . Sim p ly put, it couldn't
possibly be in a worse place .
Thank you, and I would appreciate hearing from you .

Dear Council Member Marx :
Regarding the relocation of SLO Brew :
As a resident of San Luis Obispo's Cental Core, 1 am extremelly concerned about the possibility of relocation of SLO Bre w
to the Carrissa Building on Higuera Street . The Carrissa Buidling is located on probably the most important block i n
Downtown SLO because it backs onto San Luis Creek . The Creek and the Mission are the "golden eggs" of the City . To
knowingly approve the relocation of a business, such as this, that would severely and adversely intrude on th e
specialness, and character of the Creek and the sanctity of the Mission and its Plaza would be extremely detrimental t o
the area .
We all know that a business of the nature of SLO Brew at this huge scale would guarantee errant behavior before, an d
definitely after, that would pollute and inflict harm on the special focus of this section of the Downtown . I plead that yo u
rescind any approvals for the relocation of SLO Brew .
Sincerely ,

Dear Council Members –
Regarding the relocation of SLO Brew :
I are concerned about the relocation of SLO Brew to the Carrissa Building on Higuera Street . The Carrissa Buidling is located o n
probably the most important block in Downtown SLO because it backs onto San Luis Creek . The Creek and the Mission are th e
"gems" of the City . To knowingly approve the relocation of a business, such as this, that would severely intrude on the specialness o f
the Creek and the sanctity of the Mission and its Plaza would be criminal .
We all know that a business of the nature of SLO Brew at this huge scale would guarantee behavior before, and definitely after.
concerts that would pollute the major part of the special focus of this section of the Downtown . I recommend that you rescind any
approvals for the relocation of SLO Brew . It is well-documented that the proliferation of bars and drinking establishments downtow n
is driving out retail. This business is similar to "The Graduate" and therefore would be more appropriately located in a similar locatio n
outside the Downtown Core .
I am a Cal Poly graduate in Architecture & for six years was a Planning Commissioning in the City of Oakland . I visit San Lui s
bispo several time a year and I have seen the negative impact that can occur when this type of use is approved . Please consider the
tong term consequences of your decision . Thanks!

Dear madam mayor and council members ,
My understanding is that the city is encouraging new development downtown, especiall y
mixed use development . I totally support that decision . Lots of mature folks ask me t o
help them find a residence downtown like my husband and I did . Many older people
worry about losing their driver's license and being isolated on the fringes of SLO . It i s
such a pleasure to leave the car in the garage and walk to our errands .
But we are missing some necessities in the town's core — a grocery store/delicatessen an d
a meat market . How can we encourage the establishment of these businesses withi n
walking distance? As more residences are built the demand will grow, I'm sure .
I wish Hamish Marshall would compromise and bring a grocery store into the groun d
level of the Carrissa Building . After all, the money making will occur in the second leve l
nightclub and rooftop facilities .
Thanks for your attention ,
Dixie Cliff
