HomeMy WebLinkAboutNIGHT RANGE RIFLE-HANDGUN SHOOT-DONT SHOOTNight Range Shoot/No - Rifle Course Rifle & Handgun Equipment: Rifle with 2 x 15 round magazine Handgun with 3 x 7 round magazines Purpose: To reinforce safe gun handling and accurate shot placement with the Department issued Rifle in low light conditions. Objectives: Officers will demonstrate proficiency with the Patrol Rifle and duty handgun in low light conditions. Officers will demonstrate the ability to make the proper legal/moral decisions to use lethal force to stop an assailant that is an imminent threat to yourself or another. This course will also test an Officer’s ability to use cover. Scenario: See attached diagram. The Officer begins at the SLOPD patrol vehicle where the Officers meets with an instructor who will actively coach the Officer to proceed up to the first cover/shooting point. The Officer will determine the threat and respond appropriately. When the target turns away, the Officer will move to the next shooting position to view the next target using good techniques maximizing cover points whenever possible. Officers must combine visual input from moving targets of various threat levels with auditory input in the form of verbal commands from the Instructor. Safety Precautions and Standards: Officers will execute all techniques only as fast as they safely and accurately can. Light discipline Movement with a weapon should be safe: Weapon pointed in a safe direction, finger off trigger. Officers must turn off light while moving and reloading Officers must focus beam of weapon mounted light into suspect’s eyes Scoring is Pass/Fail: Every suspect target must have at least one fatal hit. If an innocent person is shot, the student fails the course. Range is not timed. Course of fire: Officers will start in a SLOPD Patrol unit with rifle in patrol ready condition, secured in gun lock. One shooter at a time. Stage One: 20 - yard line Officer will unlock rifle from vehicle gun lock and charge a round. Remove finger from trigger & control muzzle. Safety on while moving. Run forward to 20 – yard line and take cover behind multi-position wall while issuing commands. (Shoot/no shoot targets on lanes 1 &2) STANDING – 5 shots to the body KNEELING – 5 shots to the body PRONE – 5 shots to the body Officer will load second rifle magazine while behind cover Remove finger from trigger & control muzzle. Safety on while moving. Stage Two: 15 – yard line Run forward to 15 – yard line and take cover behind multi-position wall while issuing commands. (Shoot/no shoot targets on lanes 3 &4) KNEELING – 5 shots to the body with right shoulder TRANSITION TO LEFT SHOULDER 5 shots to the body with left shoulder Remove finger from trigger & control muzzle. Safety on while moving. Stage Three: 10 – yard line Run forward to 10 – yard line and take cover behind metal object while issuing commands. (Shoot/no shoot targets on lanes 5 & 6) KNEELING - 3 shots to body, 2 shots to head TRANSITION TO HANDGUN KNEELING - 3 shots to body, 2 shots to head
