HomeMy WebLinkAboutNIGHT RANGE RIFLE-HANGUN Shoot/No-shoot Decision making course Rifle & Handgun Materials Handgun with 3 x 7 round magazines Rifle with 1 x 28 round magazine This course tests the ability of the officer to make the proper legal and moral decision to use lethal force to stop an assailant that is an imminent threat to yourself or another. Also tests officer’s ability to use cover. Scoring is Pass/Fail: Every bad guy must have at least one fatal hit. If an innocent person is shot, the student fails the course. Scenario: See attached diagram. Every Officer begins at the gate where he or she meets an instructor who will actively coach the officer to proceed up to the first cover/shooting point. The officer will determine the threat and respond appropriately. When the target turns away, the officer will move to the next shooting position to view the next target using good techniques maximizing cover points whenever possible. Students must combine visual input from moving targets of various threat levels with auditory input in the form of verbal commands from the instructor. Safety Precautions: Movement with a weapon should be safe: weapon pointed in a safe direction, finger off trigger, consider using safety while moving. Officers should move quickly with least possible exposure; however, this range is untimed. Course of fire: Continue firing on lethal target presented until it turns away or instructor advises that the suspect is neutralized (Maximum 5 rounds). In either case, officer should then proceed to the next shooting position. Issue commands as appropriate in a real situation (i.e.: What would you say to a non-threat in this scenario?). Simulate using your radio. Listen to the instructor at all times, and ask questions if you are confused or do not understand directions, movement, etc. Switch shooting hands as necessary/appropriate. Move when you can’t get a clear view of the target.
