Training Objective:
Officers will demonstrate proficiency with the Patrol Rifle and duty handgun in low light conditions. Officers will demonstrate the ability to make the proper legal/moral decisions to
use lethal force to stop an assailant that is posing an imminent threat to themselves or others. Officers will also demonstrate their ability to use cover while completing the courses
of fire.

SLOPD Range
Time required:
1 hour of DT followed by 2 hours of Range.
Pistol course - No more than 3 Officers per group, per course.
Rifle course – One Officer per course.
Number of additional proctors/ roll players needed for the training:
1. Hurni – Range Staff – Backup Instructor
2. Etherton – Range Staff
3. Lozano – Range Staff
Equipment/ Materials required:
Officers will bring personal equipment, duty handguns and patrol rifles.
SLOPD practice ammunition: 9 mm, .40, .45, .223
Training/Scenario Set up
Approximately 1 hour of initial set up and preparation each day

Warm up course of fire on steel targets
Warm up drills/Identify any equipment issues
Discussion-
Illumination Concepts
Night blindness, Limited Depth perception, Target identification
Explain/demonstrate Flashlight Shooting Techniques (Pros/Cons)
Explain/demonstrate handgun magazine changes with a flashlight
Explain/demonstrate rifle transitions to handguns
Explain/demonstrate rifle transitions (primary to support)
Explain/demonstrate rifle shooting positions (standing, kneeling, prone)
Handgun Night Shoot Course (1 time)
Officers demonstrate proficiency with skills in Handgun Night Shoot Course
Identify problems with Officers showing difficulty
Rifle Night Shoot/No Shoot Course (1 time)
Officers demonstrate proficiency with skills in Rifle Night Shoot Course
Identify problems with Officers showing difficulty

Safety Protocol:
San Luis Obispo Police Department’s safety rules will be followed. In the event of an emergency Range Instructors will communicate with dispatch and request any assistance needed.
If paramedics are summoned all ranges shall cease-fire. The closest hospital is Sierra Vista Hospital. First Aid kits are located in the range house. Immediately report any injury
to a firearm instructor. Anyone observing an unsafe act shall call a cease-fire.
