Dear Council,
I am writing to express support for item 7.b on the 04/02/2024 City Council agenda, initiation of a General Plan
amendment to allow for mixed-use development at 365 Prado. I urge Council to direct staff to process the
amendment as proposed. This GPA would allow for the future development of much needed housing in our
community. We are really in no position to request any changes in proposals like this that would increase the cost
of development or result in a reduction in units, so it is important that this proposal be processed as-is. I am
fortunate enough to be able to live and work in this area but with decades of underproduction of housing in the City
of San Luis Obispo, it is not easy. Any new housing at any affordability level creates opportunities for people and
relieves pressure on the current market, which has been shown time and again to slow and reduce housing costs.
While I may not be able to afford new construction, it means the people who can will not be competing with me for
the limited existing housing stock in the city. While a general plan amendment is far from an approval for
development, it is an important first step which will allow the developer to secure funding and bring a project
application to the city in the future. This GPA would eventually bring a win for housing production, a win for city
finances, a win for access to parks, a win for construction jobs, and more. Please, do not delay in directing staff to
process this amendment.
Thank you,
Nicholas Burgnon
