Earth Day Proclamation WHEREAS, the City acknowledges that 2023 was recorded as the hottest year on record, underscoring the urgency of addressing climate change and the potential tipping points that could have severe and irreversible impacts on the planet's ecosystems, weather patterns, biodiversity, and people; and WHEREAS, the City recognizes that proactive climate action not only mitigates environmental risks but also contributes to community well-being; and WHEREAS the transition to carbon neutrality by 2035 requires a whole of government and whole of community approach and the City remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving this goal; and WHEREAS the City remains committed to achieving carbon neutral municipal operations by 2030; and WHEREAS, the City of San Luis Obispo recognizes that a healthy environment is fundamental to the well-being of our community and its economic prosperity; and WHEREAS, the City acknowledges the urgent need to rapidly eliminate fossil fuel use; and WHEREAS, the City values the importance of open space conservation and natural resources protection, recognizing their role in enhancing the quality of life for residents, maintaining biodiversity, and preserving the unique character of our community; and WHEREAS, the City is committed to the principles of environmental justice, understanding that all residents, regardless of race, income, or socioeconomic status, have the right to a clean and healthy environment; and WHEREAS, the City values the contributions of local environmental advocates, educators, and organizations that work tirelessly to raise awareness and implement initiatives that benefit the environment; and WHEREAS, the City recognizes that Earth Day serves as a reminder to reflect on the importance of protecting our planet and encourages individuals to take meaningful steps towards environmental stewardship. NOW THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on behalf of the entire City Council, hereby proclaims “Earth Day,” as April 22, 2024, and encourages all community members to actively participate in Earth Day activities, events, and initiatives.
