HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 4b. Sexual Assault Awareness Month ProclamationWHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls attention to the fact that sexual and intimate
partner violence is widespread and impacts every person in San Luis Obispo County; and
WHEREAS, the marginalization of certain groups in society, including undocumented individuals,
transgender individuals, and those living with disabilities, increases their vulnerability to sexual
violence; and
WHEREAS, although much progress has been made toward preventing and ending sexual violence,
important work remains to be done; and
WHEREAS, LUMINA ALLIANCE continues to provide a safe environment to those affected by sexual
violence with crisis intervention, counseling, education, and emergency safe housing, with the help
of dedicated volunteers and professionals; and
WHEREAS, LUMINA ALLIANCE provided services to 1,397 people in 2022-23, including answering 2,189
calls from the crisis line; and
WHEREAS, LUMINA ALLIANCE provided evidence-based violence prevention education to 1,431 students
in SLO County in 2022-23; and
WHEREAS, LUMINA ALLIANCE encourages the community to recognize our collective power to
create a culture that supports survivors and works to create a community where everyone can
live free from violence.
WHEREAS, LUMINA ALLIANCE is celebrating its 45th Anniversary of serving survivors of sexual and
intimate partner violence in SLO County in 2024; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Luis Obispo strongly supports the efforts of LUMINA ALLIANCE, how every
segment of our community can work together to better address sexual violence, and how to help
survivors connect with services; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the entire
City Council do hereby proclaim the month of April to be National Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
