HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 5a. Water Safety Month ProclamationWHEREAS, the community of San Luis Obispo recognize the vital role that swimming and aquatic-
related activities can play in maintaining good physical and mental health, and in enhancing the quality
of life for all people; and
WHEREAS, developing physical skills related to water safety is essential to preventing drowning
and water-related injuries as it prepares individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to best
respond to a water-related emergency; and
WHEREAS, understanding and adhering to research-proven strategies regarding water safety can
save lives, including constant and capable supervision, engagement in swimming lessons for adults
and children, rapid emergency response such as CPR, restricted access to bodies of water, and proper
use of lifejackets; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of San Luis Obispo understand the essential role that education regarding
the topic of water safety plays in preparing for drowning response, drowning prevention, and
recreational water-related injuries; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Luis Obispo, and the community at large acknowledge that drowning is a
complex issue and that progress in reducing the burden and occurrence of fatal and non-fatal
drowning requires diverse perspectives and approaches; and
WHEREAS, during the month of May, the City of San Luis Obispo’s Water Safety campaign will engage
the community through a coordinated and comprehensive safety program for drowning prevention,
including the ABC’s of Water Safety, Water Safety for Parents and Children, and the Aquatic Safety
Awareness Program.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the entire City
Council proclaim May 2024 as, “Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Month” And urge all community
members of San Luis Obispo to participate in efforts to reduce drowning risk by preparing themselves
and their families in the proper water safety response procedures that help to protect and save lives.
