Support the Welcome Home Village
May 8th,2024
Dear Planning Commissioners:
Strong Towns SLO is a hyper-local,community movement made of San Luis
Obispo residents dedicated to building a stronger, more resilient city.We are
writing today in support of the Welcome Home Village at 1463 Bishop St (Item
5b).
We believe a strong and resilient community is one that supports all of its
residents, especially in their times of need.We are incredibly excited for a
project that will not only house 80 of our neighbors, but also provide
comprehensive services to help residents find permanent housing that works
for them.We believe the location proposed at the corner of Bishop and
Johnson is a great place for this project due to its proximity to the county
behavioral health services and walkable necessities like groceries and
pharmacies.
The previous projects built by Dignity Moves are inspiring both in their
architectural character and success rates.Without a doubt, the proposed
village will be much more beautiful than the current parking lot.Furthermore,
the success of similar communities in Isla Vista,Grover Beach, and Santa
Maria makes us confident that this model would be effective in housing people
permanently and reducing overall costs for our community.
Housing is clearly aligned with the intent of residential land use zones.
Otherwise,what are residential zones for?
We have a unique opportunity with this grant to build homes for our neighbors,
let’s not miss it.We urge you to support this project and prioritize housing
people as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your dedication to our community.
