Dear Planning Commission,
The comments below pertain to the proposed Welcome Home Village site at Johnson Avenue and Bishop Street.
I understand that the proposed location was not the first choice…due to legal challenges and a very short timeline on
grant funding, the original site was scrapped, leaving those officials involved scrambling for a new site. Hasty decisions
made solely to secure funding can lead to trouble. It seems reasonable to say that proper time should be taken to
review options and study potential effects before endeavoring into such an impactful venture. After all, you are a
planning commission. Issues that include density, zoning, noise, parking, bicycle and pedestrian thoroughfares, etc.
should be carefully considered before any approvals are granted.
My point is not to turn my back on the issue of homelessness. Rather, it is that the Welcome Home Village project is of a
magnitude that it needs time for careful consideration. A looming deadline on grant funding is no reason to put a rush
on decisions affecting a project that will affect so many local residents. Please take the time necessary to thoroughly
review the proposed project at Johnson and Bishop.
Thank you,
Ted Rich
