Hi y’all.
My wife and I are the owners of Two Broads Ciderworks. We have thought long and hard about names and are
frequently asked about ours. It comes from the term Broad Wife. As you may know, some people think it is a derogatory
term for women. But who made it so? Probably men who didn’t like women in charge. We intend to redeem the term.
I’m not sure “bros” will be able to do the same. It’s a group of people exhibiting disrespectful behaviors, even glorifying
them. I don’t want people to come to our neighborhood or tasting room thinking those behaviors are okay. They are bad
for everyone’s mental health and bad for business. Lo brings bros even lower giving readers an even lower expectation
of who is in the neighborhood. Are people going to want to come to a neighborhood with that connotation?
People may not always be able to articulate their feelings about a name. It’s often a subconscious reaction they barely
experience, but these little things add up. I was told never to use negatives with guests when I worked in the restaurant
industry because it would subtly influence their experience at the restaurant, which we wanted to be as positive as
possible. If I might give them a negative answer, I was asked to reframe it as a positive alternative. With all the negativity
in the name lo bro, I would like to ask for something more positive or even neutral.
Spelling out Lower Broad might be better. Picking a different intersection to highlight, maybe. Laurel and Orcutt? Maybe
Midway, because we are in between the airport and downtown. What about Outer Broad?
We appreciate the effort to bring folks to other parts of the city. We appreciate you taking our comments. We hope you
will be able to rename our area without much effort.
Thank you so much.
Maggie
