To Whom it May Concern,
The moniker of “LoBro” applying to the Lower Broad Street neighborhood in SLO shouldn’t
be interpreted as anything other than what it is: an abbreviation and nickname for a
neighborhood is SLO. To claim it is promoting “bro culture" is bringing more attention to
“bro” culture than I've ever paid attention to in my life, I didn’t even know what it was
before it was pointed out to me by those in opposition to the name. I’m sure I'm not the
only one who has experienced this.
Perhaps if we are concerned about “bro culture”, we should point our focus on the St.
Patty’s Day parties where “bros” were doing pull ups from power lines, which is actually
“bro culture”. That is, if you are able to define it, since it has varying definitions being a
neologism and varies significantly based on source.
Any person who takes “LoBro” as standing for anything other than Lower Broad should
perhaps do some self-examination as to the way their brain works, this is a you problem
not an us problem. We cannot sit and worry what people will do with words taken out of
context all day long, get real, put things in context, move along..
Let’s be real. LoBro was made up by kids in the neighborhood during covid, if you lived
there you’d know that. It all started with people coming together at 8 PM to howl and unite
while isolated in a very uncertain and scary time and place in our lives. The kids chalked it
onto street corners. We were watching hundreds of thousands of people die on our TVs
and the “LoBro” howl was something we looked forward to. It brought a lot of light to a
dark time. Someone's misinterpretation and incorrect lens shouldn't cast a shadow on
something so uniting and positive.
Defining lower Broad Street as "LoBro" promotes community and culture in our little slice
of SLO, it gives lift to an area that’s seen growth in both population and business
development. Defining, promoting it, and raising it up is what we are trying to do. Those
who are taking it out of context and trying to bring the synergy down should potentially find
something more worthwhile to do than rally against it. There's much better causes to get
behind in our town
Sincerely,
Your proud LoBro neighbor
