Part 2 Organizational Information
1. Purpose/Mission Statement *
Shower the People's mission is to provide access to a free hot shower to the homeless in our community.
2. Briefly describe your organization’s purpose, vision, primary activities, and operating structures *
Shower the People (STP) is an all-volunteer, non-profit mobile shower program that provides unconditional access to a free shower to the
homeless in our community. Our shower sites have been a welcoming, safe, clean and reliable places for the homeless to shower for the
past 6 years. Currently we have 4 shower sites in SLO and one site in Grover Beach. All of our current sites in San Luis are often at capacity,
providing anywhere from 25 to 30+ showers a day, 4 days a week. STP provided access to 7,321 total showers in 2023, 6,218 in the City of
San Luis alone. This was the most showers STP has ever provided in a single year. The need is great.
Shower the People has a team of 35 volunteers who work both on-site and behind the scenes. Each shower site is run by a team of 6
volunteers; a Supervisor, Intake/Greater, Driver and 3 Cleaners. Shower operations are overseen by the General Manager and an
Operations Team consisting of the Manager and 3 Site Supervisors. The General Manager reports to Shower the People's 9 person Board of
Directors.

Shower the People provides the opportunity to shower unconditionally. Our 5 sites are located in San Luis and in Grover Beach. Our
shower guests are primarily the unsheltered living in our communities.

Our Major sources of funding are from SLO County and Grants from the cities of San Luis, Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach and Grover Beach.
We also get funding from local churches and individual donations.

1. Please provide an executive summary of proposed project/program *
Shower the People will continue to provide access to a free shower to the homeless at our current 4 sites in San Luis. Our program will
continue to supply our shower guests with a new pair of underwear, socks, T-shirt, a comb and hand sanitizer. As we increase our number
of volunteers our intent is to open one more location in San Luis at the BMW dinner for the homeless on Thursday evenings

4. Please provide a detailed description of proposed project/program *
Shower the People will continue to provide free hot showers through our mobile shower program at 4 shower sites located in San Luis. The
locations are: every Tuesday/Thursday, Unitarian Universalist Church 10AM-1PM; every Saturday, United Church of Christ 10AM-1PM;
every Sunday, SLO Library 12:30 - 3:30PM. STP reliably provides showers rain or shine and on all Holidays. Our plan is to open a 5th site in
San Luis in 2024. STP's team of local volunteers assures that our sites are welcoming, safe, clean and reliable sites.
STP's shower program provides new underwear, socks, T-shirts, combs toothpaste/toothbrush and hand sanitizer to our shower guests.
STP uses biodegradable soap/shampoo. Our towels and washcloths are laundered by the Arroyo Grande Community Hospital where we
pick them up and return them weekly.
At each shower site STP records the number of folks taking a shower or supplies, their gender, veteran status and age range. We use this
data in reports that we share with our volunteers, partners, city governments and our donors .

Our shower program unconditionally provides showers. Primarily our guests are the unsheltered living in our communities.
6. The HRC has identified homeless prevention including affordable and alternative housing, supportive services, and
transitional housing as the main funding priority. Does your grant request meet this funding priority?*

8. Provide timeline for project *
This grant will help support our services over one full year.
9. Identify any partnerships/collaborations that are supporting this project/program and their roles *
Vituity, a pop-up clinic of physicians, partners with STP once a month at the SLO Library location. They provide our guests with free medical
check-ups, treatments and vaccines. The Access Support Network joins the pop-up clinic and provides free AIDS/HIV exams, tests, and
medications. Many of our shower guests take advantage of their services.
The County Nurse Navigator is on site weekly at 2 of our sites. She provides medical support and hooks our guests up to needed medical
coverage and health and social services.
STP has provided showers at the Veterans Stand Down for 5 years.
STP has partnered recently with TMHA at their Homeless Resource Fair.
CAPSLO's outreach worker routinely visits our sites.
"Wash Me Go" provides free haircuts weekly at 2 of our sites.
At all of our sites we have churches, agencies and individuals that provide food for our guests, including People's Kitchen, The Food Share
Program, The Agape Men's group, Grassroots, Food not Bombs and many individuals .
10. Describe your plan for sustainability beyond the City’s one-year award funding *
STP started it's shower program in 2018 and as of December 2023 has provided a total of 20,000 showers to the homeless. Our plan is to
continue to provide all our donors and supporters with our shower data and to continue to ask for support for our program.
11. Describe the plan for promoting this project, program, or service within the City of San Luis Obispo *
Shower the People sends reports on our program to the City biannually. We keep an open dialog with the City Manger and the City
Homeless Response Manager on our program's challenges and it's successes.
In the community Shower the People is often asked to talk about our shower program by local churches and clubs. We participates in local
non-profit events. STP has had articles written about the program in the local Tribune newspaper, The Green Directory and in New Times.
We also have had TV interviews about our program by our local TV stations. Also, STP is happy to have had our Shower Trailer in the SLO
Holiday Parade for 2 years.

Shower the People Diversity and Inclusion Policy
Shower the People (STP) maintains a diverse, inclusive, and
equitable workplace where all volunteers, whatever their gender,
race, ethnicity, national origin, age, religion or belief, sexual
orientation or identity, education or disability, feel valued and
respected. STP is committed to a nondiscriminatory approach.

Shower the People strives to:
• See diversity, inclusion, and equity as connected to our
mission and critical to ensure the well-being of our
volunteers and the communities we serve.
• Practice and encourage transparent communication in all
interactions.
• Commit time and resources to expand more diverse
leadership within our board, committees, and advisory
groups.
• Lead with respect and tolerance. We expect all volunteers to
embrace this notion and to express it in workplace
interactions and through everyday practices.
This policy will be reviewed and updated at the Annual Meeting of
the Board of Directors.
