WHEREAS, creating bicycle-friendly communities has been shown to improve citizens’ health, well-
being, and quality of life, boost community spirit, improve traffic safety, and reduce pollution and
congestion; and,
WHEREAS, bicycle transportation is an integral part of a "multi-modal" transportation system,
and expanding their use serves a significant role in the City of San Luis Obispo’s Major City Goals for
transportation mode-shift; and,
WHEREAS, bicycling activities and attractions have proven positive impact on San Luis Obispo
County’s economy and tourism industry and stimulate economic development; and,
WHEREAS, the education of bicyclists and motorists as to the proper and safe operation of
bicycles is important to ensure the safety and comfort of all users; and,
WHEREAS, Bike Month 2024 is inclusive and all are requested, whether veteran, novice, commuter,
or recreational rider, to ride bicycles to destinations throughout San Luis Obispo County; and,
WHEREAS, Bike Month 2024 promotions such as Bike to School Day (May 8) and Bike to Work Week (May
13-17) encourage citizens to ride their bicycles, thereby reducing vehicular emissions in the county; and,
WHEREAS, SLO Regional Rideshare (a program of the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments) will
help businesses, organizations and schools encourage and reward customers, students, and
employees who commute by bicycle through incentives, awards, and other benefits; and,
WHEREAS, Bike SLO County, a non-governmental advocacy, outreach, and education organization
collaborates with governmental and community partners to promote the use of bicycles as real
transportation.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on behalf of the entire
City Council proclaim May 2024 as Bike Month, May 13 to May 17, 2024 as Bike to Work Week, and May 8,
2024 as Bike to School Day.
