WHEREAS, tourism is an economic powerhouse with a nationwide output of $2.8 trillion in 2023; and,
WHEREAS, in San Luis Obispo County, tourism generated $2.32 billion in visitor spending, $207 million
in state & local tax, and supported 22,830 jobs in 2023; and,
WHEREAS, the transient occupancy tax revenue contributes 10-percent of the City’s general fund
which pays for community benefits such as infrastructure projects and quality of life experiences,
including access to open space; and,
WHEREAS, tourism is an essential industry, leads to economic growth, benefits businesses, fosters
mutual understanding, and connects the nation; and,
WHEREAS, The California Legislature in 2016 declared every May as California Tourism Month to
celebrate the economic power of tourism in California; and,
WHEREAS, welcoming visitors from near and far always has been, and always will be, the enduring
ethos of the travel industry in San Luis Obispo and throughout California; and,
WHEREAS, Visit SLO, the official Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) for the City of San
Luis Obispo, leads the tourism community in the City of San Luis Obispo region; advocating for our
tourism ecosystem; and sharing critical industry data; and,
WHEREAS, Visit SLO CAL, the countywide destination marketing and management (DMMO)
organization for SLO CAL® (San Luis Obispo County) is responsible for promoting SLO CAL communities
as an attractive travel region strengthening our regional economy.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on behalf of the entire
City Council proclaim the week of May 19-25, 2024, as “National Travel and Tourism Week” and the month
of May 2024 as “California Tourism Month” in San Luis Obispo and commend Visit SLO and Visit SLO CAL
for their work promoting tourism and urge our citizens to join me in recognizing the critical role
this industry plays in our community and state.
