Dear Mayor Stewart and SLO City Council members, I’ve heard that the building sector accounts for 25% of SLO’s overall emissions so we need to lower that impact and this staff report provides the information necessary to begin the journey toward decreasing these emissions. It is evident that decarbonizing existing buildings is critical to meeting SLO City's climate goals. Ed Mazria, a renowned architect and CEO of the nonprofit Architecture 2030, was at Cal Poly and indicated we could make most progress by figuring out which large buildings emit he most carbon and concentrate efforts on those. I have included a link to his powerful data contained in his report: https://www.architectmagazine.com/carbon-positive/a-recent- report-shows-building-decarbonization-successes_o Decarbonizing our buildings through efficiency, electrification, and clean energy means improved health, safety, affordability, and climate protection. The City needs to explore every policy and program available that may help make meaningful progress decarbonizing existing buildings. Dramatic emissions, pollution, safety, and cost reduction benefits should convince everyone that all options should be considered and explored further for the benefit of everyone who lives in this community. The suggested energy efficiency measures are not only cost effective - especially given the available local, state, and federal incentives - they increase comfort, health, and climate-resilience when receiving a major addition or alteration Thank you also for Leading by Example!
