Regarding:Agenda Item 7.b,May 21,2024 Council Meeting
Hello. My name is Luke Mendoza,I am an environmental management student at Cal Poly SLO
and current intern for SLO Climate Coalition.I am emailing in support of Council Agenda Item
7.b;I heavily back San Luis Obispo’s pursuits to adopt an energy-efficient renovations policy for
major resident additions and alterations.
With SLO’s Community Action Plan in motion and the cities’efforts for carbon neutrality by
2035 and an 100%renewable electricity mix by 2030,it is with no doubt that retrofitting energy
use from fossil fuel to high-efficiency energy paves the way towards the cities’journey to
regenerative sustainability.Current buildings,without proper compliance,can risk excessive
GHG emissions that pose a health concern for the home environment and SLO microclimate.
Proper energy-efficiency compliance for single-use residencies upon addition/renovation offers
another venue that incrementally pushes homeowners towards energy efficiency. From minor
alterations, such as LED installation,to major changes like electric heat pump installment,
residents are capable of making incremental changes that are economically, environmentally, and
socially beneficial.
On behalf of me and my colleagues at Cal Poly,we admire the city’s efforts in the development
of an energy-efficient renovations policy.Thank you for your efforts in making SLO a
sustainable city for our citizens and students.
