EQUIPMENT ONSITE:Jumping jack tampers (2), mini excavator, skip loader
Summary: AM visit at the request of Bill Fagundes with City of SLO to test compaction of trench
backfill at the intersection of Broad Street and Monterey Street. Prior to my visit, the contractor
backfilled to base grade approximately 10 LF of trench that range in depth between 5 to 7 feet to
clear the gas line along Broad Street. Corby/JMC foreman indicated that the trench was backfilled
with import sand and compacted in approximately 8-in lifts with a jumping jack tamper. Bill F./City
of SLO declined potholing to test the deeper backfill if 95% relative compaction was achieved at
the current base grade elevation. I performed (1) a nuclear moisture density test at base grade
with results meeting the 95% compaction specification. I remained on site at the request of Bill F.
to observe and tests additional trench backfill along and across Monterey Street at various depths.
Performed (4) four nuclear moisture-density tests on observed backfill with results meeting the
95% relative compaction specification. I relayed the results to Bill and Corby.
