Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear SLO Active Transportation Committee, I am asking you to extend the raised multiuse trail on Madonna Rd to Higuera. This will close the only gap in a safe route for many children to bike to Laguna Middle School & SLO High School and back home. It will connect the raised multiuse trail on Madonna Rd with Bridge St and Meadow Park that will provide a safe corridor for students (and thus almost everyone traveling by bike) to downtown and to Sinsheimer. This will provide a transformational mode shift. The unique site configurations and traffic patterns at this project location need to be considered when developing solutions to improve safety. Continuation of the multiuse trail on the downtown side of Madonna Rd will eliminate crossing two unprotected highway 101 off ramps and the need to cross Madonna Rd twice. This is critical since fatalities in SLO (and nationally) often occur at intersections. Additionally, studies have shown that raised multiuse trails on bridges are the safest solution. The alternative considered for this site (routing cyclists across Madonna Rd twice, through two unprotected highway 101 off ramps and unprotected across the busiest driveway in the area) will provide a lower level of safety than the continuation of the multiuse trail. The alternative will not accomplish Vision Zero goals and it will not result in most families allowing their children to bike to school. Please listen to the voices of local community members and heed Vision Zero design principles, both of which appeal for extension of the multiuse trail on the downtown side of Madonna Rd. Thanks, Joey Watermeyer 1
