Juneteenth Day ProclamationWHEREAS, Juneteenth has become the harbinger of the ending of the institution of slavery in this great nation; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth embodies the indomitable human spirit of the past, in the present, and all time; and WHEREAS, the celebration of Juneteenth gives us all the opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the true American spirit; and WHEREAS, we are citizens that wish to secure the blessings of freedom, justice, and equality for all in this great City of ours; and WHEREAS, the collaboration of community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and local businesses, and local government are committed to being part of the solution and guidance in continuing the struggle for freedom, justice, and equality for all. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the entire City Council proclaim the third Saturday in June 2024 as “Juneteenth Day” and recommends that all citizens of the City of San Luis Obispo join in recognizing the importance of this day.
