Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear ATC members, Thank you for the work you are putting into the design recommendations for the Foothill corridor. Our community has suffered incredible losses of life due to the lack of physical barriers along this very popular bike/ped route. I urge you to make your recommendations with the perspective that the safety of non-car drivers comes first. This corridor serves two elementary schools, childcare facilities, Cal Poly student housing as well as hundreds of residential units. Because of this, on-street car storage and people that choose to drive their cars through this part of town are not acceptable reasons for deprioritizing pedestrian/cyclist safety. Please consider the following as you work through the agenda packet. 1. Please recommend a pedestrian hybrid beacon at Foothill and Casa. People ride the wrong way from California to Casa because there is no safe way to cross the street when coming down the hill on Foothill east of California. A hybrid beacon (if designed correctly with the potential for a pedestrian island, or the types of striping/bollards, etc used on Johnson at Sydney St.) will also have the benefit of slowing down vehicle speeds in this highly congested area. 2. If car storage along Foothill must continue, please consider switching the cars and the bike lane. This will create a safe buffer for cyclists and pedestrians. If it is safe for cyclists to ride Foothill with a buffered paint job as protection, it is equally safe for someone getting in and out of their vehicle. This type of design works great on Higuera St. downtown. 3. Please recommend protected bike lanes throughout the entire corridor. Physical barriers stop cars from crashing into cyclists, paint does not. 4. And finally, please don't get bogged down in the design cost differences. I urge you to not settle on your recommendations. The ATC is responsible for making the best, safest recommendations to City Council for those that walk, scoot and ride. Please give the City Council a strong recommendation based on your committee's objectives. Again, I truly appreciate all of the work you do!!!!
