Americans and are an important factor in reducing fossil fuel dependency and production of harmful
greenhouse gas emissions; and
Whereas, in 1971, the State of California’s Legislature enacted the Transportation Development Act
to improve public transportation services including the provision of funding for transit and non-
transit related purposes; and
Whereas, in 1974, based on recommendations from the Mass Transportation Committee, the Council
of the City of San Luis Obispo established San Luis Obispo (SLO) Transit which began service on April 1st of
that year; and
Whereas, in 1985, the City entered into the first transit service agreement with Cal Poly University
enabling students, staff, and faculty to ride SLO Transit buses for free, increasing ridership to and
from campus and around the City; and
WHEREAS, in 2023, SLO Transit introduced two fully electric buses in accordance with state mandates
which also serves as a critical component to the City achieving its goal of carbon neutrality by 2035;
and
WHEREAS, the mission of SLO Transit has been and continues to be to provide equitable and
sustainable transportation for the City of San Luis Obispo, in alignment with nationwide efforts
including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Department
of Transportation’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program; and
WHEREAS, in 2024 the City of San Luis Obispo celebrates the 50th Anniversary of SLO Transit which
provides reliable, convenient, and accessible transit service for more than half a million passenger
trips every year.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the entire City
Council proclaim August 20, 2024, to be SLO Transit Day in San Luis Obispo, CA.
