greenhouse gas emissions in America coming from the transportation sector. The
electrification of transportation is one of the most effective ways to help reduce climate
pollution.
WHEREAS, California’s innovative climate change policies are among the most aggressive in
the nation, requiring all new passenger cars, trucks, and SUVs sold in California to be zero-
emission vehicles by 2035.
WHEREAS, Locally, motor vehicles account for 47% of air pollution in SLO County. Mass
adoption of electric vehicles is a viable and necessary step to meeting climate and air quality
goals, as well as the GHG reduction goals of the City of San Luis Obispo.
WHEREAS, The City strives to be a leader in taking climate action and improving sustainability
by mobilizing eight zero-emission buses, installing more EV parking spaces, and creating more
protected bike lanes and walkways.
WHEREAS, The City will continue to demonstrate the sustainability values of leadership,
collaboration, accountability, responsiveness, and fact-based initiatives as we move forward in
the climate change fight.
WHEREAS, SLO Climate Coalition and the SLO County Air Pollution Control District are assisting
the City and its residents to become carbon-free by organizing Drive Electric Week SLO events
in our community. National Drive Electric Week is a nationwide celebration to raise awareness
of the many benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars, trucks, motorcycles, and bikes.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the
entire City Council hereby proclaim September 27 to October 6 is National Drive Electric Week
in the City of San Luis Obispo. All citizens are to join me in reaching our climate-action goals
and creating a better living through sustainable energy and electric transportation.
