WHEREAS, the City of San Luis Obispo recognizes the vital role technology has in our daily
lives, whereby today, community members are increasingly reliant on information systems to
support financial services, energy, telecommunications, transportation, utilities, healthcare,
and emergency response systems; and
WHEREAS, maintaining the security of cyberspace is a shared responsibility in which each
of us has a critical role, and awareness of computer security essentials will improve the
security of the City of San Luis Obispo information infrastructure and economy; and
WHEREAS, cybersecurity awareness and education helps to ensure that all members of
society, ranging from elementary and college students, to government agencies, to small and
large businesses, can safely benefit from digital interconnectivity; and
WHEREAS, individuals, businesses, and organizations can protect themselves against
financial loss and data theft from phishing, viruses, ransomware, and other types of malicious
software by using enhanced security measures, including enabling multi-factor
authentication, creating unique and robust passwords, and updating software as well as
remaining responsible and careful when using the internet; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Luis Obispo is committed to promoting Cyber Security Awareness
throughout the City and its partners.
NOW, THEREFORE, I. Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on behalf of the
entire City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2024 as National Cybersecurity
Awareness Month.
