Attention: 2024-25 DEI HIGH IMPACT GRANT
Dear Grant Review Committee:
I am writing in support of the Diversity Coalition of SLO County’s BIPOC Board
Leadership Training Program. Spokes has worked closely with the program this year
and we have been very impressed with the preparation participants in the program
receive.
There are nearly 1,600 501(c)3 charitable organizations in San Luis Obispo County. Of
these, 273 are based in the City of San Luis Obispo. To exist, each of these
organizations needs a board of directors. To thrive, each needs knowledgeable and
capable individuals to serve as directors. Yet far too many of our nonprofits struggle to
find people willing, able, and prepared to take on this responsibility.
The Diversity Coalition’s BIPOC Board Leadership Program not only helps to increase
the pool of potential, ready-to-serve board members, but it simultaneously promotes
diversity, equity, and inclusion in the leadership of our city and county nonprofit boards.
Thank you for considering the Coalition’s grant application and for your ongoing
commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in San Luis Obispo.
Sincerely,
Michael Simkins, Ed.D.
