partner violence is widespread and impacts every person in San Luis Obispo; and
WHEREAS, Lumina Alliance provides essential, lifesaving services for survivors, their children, and
families throughout San Luis Obispo County.
WHEREAS, domestic violence is a pattern of control in an intimate relationship where one person
uses coercion and violence to gain power and control over his or her partner; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and even death.
The devastating consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and can last a lifetime; and
WHEREAS, the marginalization of certain groups in society, including undocumented individuals,
transgender individuals, and those living with disabilities, increases their vulnerability to intimate
partner violence; and
WHEREAS, LUMINA ALLIANCE continues to provide a safe environment to those affected by domestic
violence with a 24-hr crisis line, advocacy, therapy, transitional and emergency housing, and
prevention education, with the help of dedicated volunteers and professionals; and
WHEREAS, LUMINA ALLIANCE has received over two thousand calls to the crisis & information line,
provided more than six thousand collective nights for shelter clients, and provided more than four
thousand eight hundred hours of therapy; and
WHEREAS, LUMINA ALLIANCE serves as “A Bright Light During Dark Times” for survivors of Intimate
Partner Violence, illuminating a path toward safety and healing.
WHEREAS, the City of San Luis Obispo strongly supports the efforts of LUMINA ALLIANCE, how every
segment of our society can work together to address intimate partner violence, and how to help
survivors connect with services; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on behalf
of the entire City Council do hereby proclaim the month of October to be National Dating and Domestic
Violence Awareness Month.
