Dear Advisory Body, I am writing in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters in regards to the 2024-25 DEI High Impact Grant Program. Having been a site-based mentor at Pacheco Elementary since my freshman year, I have personally witnessed the impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion for countless kids. With over 40% of our Littles coming from monolingual, Spanish-speaking households, our recruitment of bilingual Bigs has provided these kids the opportunity to connect with a mentor who can speak with them in whichever language is most comfortable-a privilege not afforded to many. Big Brothers Big Sisters recognizes that no matter the language we speak or the background we come from, all people deserve a positive role model in their lives, and through the DEI programs Big Brothers Big Sisters has implemented, we have ensured that diversity is not a barrier to mentorship: rather, diversity enhances mentorship's power. Pacheco is a place of incredible empathy, where differences are celebrated rather than shunned, and this is all due to Big Brothers Big Sisters' commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Having watched two Littles of mine graduate the program and go off into the world, I'm confident they've graduated knowing how to promote inclusivity in the world around them and embrace and cherish what makes them different from others. For the sake of a more equitable future, I strongly advocate that Big Brothers Big Sisters should receive the 2024-25 DEI High Impact Grant. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me. Sincerely, Wesley Bartlett (805)471-0427 1
