Attention: 2024-25 DEI HIGH IMPACT GRANT
Dear Grant Review Committee:
My name is Roberta Richey-Hamilton,
I am a resident of and work in San Luis Obispo.
I have been participating in R.A.C.E. Matters programs since 2020.
One program I currently participate in is the Shop Talk monthly meet-up which takes place at R.A.C.E.
Matter’s Texture salon.
Shop Talk is a monthly gathering that gives me the opportunity to decompress, discuss and share life and
current issues that impact myself and our Black Community in a safe space.
Meeting with like minded and kinded persons helps me to not feel alone, feel supported and strengthens
me to meet and overcome daily obstacles and struggles.
Shop Talk is of major significance to our Black Community in San Luis Obispo as we exist in such a small
percentage of the City's population but bring and dedicate our talent/skills to San Luis Obispo while
constantly navigating a not so reciprocal environment.
I was disappointed to learn that R.A.C.E. Matter’s Shop Talk program was not selected for funding.
Real change requires sustained, year-after-year funding and effort to reverse years of exclusion.
R.A.C.E. Matters is the only group focused on creating Black-centered spaces in the City.
I respectfully request that you reconsider, and grant R.A.C.E. Matters $5,000 towards Shop Talk wellness
programs based at Texture.
1
Sincerely,
Roberta Richey-Hamilton
