Mayor Stewart and Council Members,
Unlike many universities, Cal Poly does not have a fraternity and sorority row. This has forced the creation of
various fraternities within family neighborhoods, and in turn, the exodus of these families. The lovely
neighborhood north of Foothill and California has now become a not so lovely student neighborhood. Still,
enough families remain, and these families help maintain an appearance of peace and tidiness to the area. The
city must do everything possible to protect these families, and the staff must reconsider some of their
conclusions regarding the Lambda Chi Alpha Conditional Use Permit.
1. Condition 14: Change it to “no meetings or other gatherings involving persons other than the 24
fraternity members living on the site are allowed between the hours of 10 pm and 9 am, except as
approved in writing as a special event by the Community Development Director.
2. Condition 16: Change it to “no events involving the use of amplified sound equipment shall be
allowed.”
I also agree with the new conditions suggested by RQN in their letter, and I urge you to read them very
carefully. It does not ban student entertainment; it makes it more acceptable to everyone. The city ought to
remember that their allegiance goes first to the residents who have lived here for years and are planning to
remain here if only they receive enough support from those who are elected to support them.
Sincerely,
Odile Ayral
