Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Mayor Stewart and Council Members, I sent my letter to the council before I read the letters of Steve and Karen Walker, and I want to add this post. I do hope the council reads the Walkers’ letters carefully despite their length because what has happened to them due to the presence of fraternities in their neighborhood is simply horrific. How can such things take place in our “sweet” little city? Well, they happen because Cal Poly does not care, and because the city seems to be more concerned about pleasing the university than the residents. I am one of those lucky people who has lived next door to very well-behaved students for years. Considerate, quiet and pleasant year after year, but why? Their landlord screens them and sets very clear rules. I repeat VERY CLEAR RULES. If they break them, they are out, but there has never been any need for this because they know that the owner is not joking. The city sets rules they are not planning to enforce (for example parking permit neighborhoods, two-hour parking in neighborhoods, etc., forcing the neighbors to do the police job, and facing the possibility of reprisal). When you create rules but also intend to create loopholes in these rules—as you are doing in the case of the Lambda Chi Alpha—you might as well not have any rules at all. You might as well say in words that you don’t care about the families who live in this city because your actions are saying it. Please, walk in your neighbors’ shoes for the time it will take to read the Walkers’ letters, and make sure that regulations (noise and others) are enforced, that breaking these regulations will not be tolerated and will have consequences. Thank you. Odile Ayral 1
