Arbor Day ProclamationWHEREAS in 1872, Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska; Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and, WHEREAS the City of San Luis Obispo celebrated its first Arbor Day in 1983, and now in 2024, the City continues to work towards its goal of planting 10,000 new trees by 2035 because wherever trees are planted, they add beauty to our City, provide a source of joy and spiritual renewal, thus increasing the environmental, social and economic sustainability of our City; and, WHEREAS trees can be a solution to combating climate change by reducing erosion and slowing stormwater runoff, slowing, spreading and sinking rainfall to increase groundwater recharge, cutting heating and cooling costs, moderating the temperature, cleaning the air, producing oxygen, and providing habitat for wildlife; and, WHEREAS the City of San Luis Obispo has been recognized as a Tree City USA for 41 years by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting and Urban Forestry Program. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim November 2, 2024, as “Arbor Day” in the City of San Luis Obispo, and urge all citizens to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands and to support our City’s Urban Forestry Program; and further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to promote the well-being of present and future generations.
