Cultural Heritage Committee 999 Palm Street, San Luis Obispo, 93401 advisorybodies@slocity.org Re: 466 Dana St. The Waterman Village Dear Chair Crotzer and Members Gray, Tischler, Arrona, Simon, Bernard, and Ashbaugh, I write in support of and respectfully request that the CHC recommend that the Planning Commission approve the proposed Waterman Village, located at 466 Dana Street in San Luis Obispo. Affordable housing is a critical issue on the Central Coast and Waterman Village is part of the solution.. While tiny house living isn’t for every taste, for many it is ideal. One of our family members installed a tiny house on our lot, within the city, and it provides him an opportunity to live in this beautiful community at an affordable price. Waterman Village offers centrally located homes for San Luis Obispo residents of limited means—particularly the City’s 1 in 3 single-person households—to live among a community and have the option for car-free living with services nearby. To maintain the historic character of the property, development of homes will maintain the adobe’s prominent setback from Dana Street, reflecting the broad open space that defines the initial perspective towards the house. In addition to a cultural heritage center, the development will provide our community with a model of sustainable living practices, encourage community interaction and active lifestyles through safe pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and a shaded park. This project is a win-win. As a long-time resident of San Luis Obispo I want to create more affordable housing opportunities for others. The development of Waterman Village not only provides housing, it also provides community members to access a historic resource which has been sitting empty and boarded up for more than 30 years. Thank you for your support of this innovative project that meets so many City goals. Sincerely, Judy Philbin San Luis Obispo 1
