Dear Active Transportation Committee,
I am writing about the plans for the 2025 paving project that includes Tank Farm Road east of Broad
Street. I live just off of Tank Farm Rd near Orcutt Rd and commute daily by bicycle on Tank Farm with my
children. I am very pleased to see that there are bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements planned,
especially the inclusion of vertical separation of bicycles from vehicles. I would encourage you, however,
to implement real physical barriers (e.g. concrete curbs) rather than flex posts, as the flex posts provide
only visual separation and no real physical protection.
The RRFB beacons planned for the Righetti Ranch Roundabout are also a very important part of this
proposal. Car drivers have a difficult time seeing pedestrians at this roundabout and the ability for
pedestrians to actuate the beacons should substantially improve crossing safety there. Please also
consider adding RRFB beacons at the roundabout at Tank Farm and Orcutt. This crossing, which
pedestrians use to access Islay Park, is also very dangerous for pedestrians as cars rarely yield for
pedestrians here as well.
It would also be helpful to investigate additional traffic calming measures for cars entering the Righetti
Ranch Roundabout who are traveling eastbound on Tank Farm Rd. Because of the configuration of the
entry and exit into the roundabout for drivers who are continuing straight east, vehicles are able to wiggle
through the slight bend at speeds that are unsafe for cars, bikes, and pedestrians in the roundabout who
should have the right-of-way. Cars traveling west enter the roundabout at a different angle and are
calmed in such a way that I rarely encounter issues with right-of-way, but cars traveling uphill to the east
often drive through the roundabout as though it's a straight road with no yield sign and I have had many
scary encounters when coming from Righetti Ranch Rd attempting to turn east onto Tank Farm Rd. This is
dangerous for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
Thank you,
Greg Scott
